AI search optimisation · Oxford
Get found in Google and in the AI answers.
More customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews who to use, instead of scrolling through a list of links. I make sure your website gives those tools clear, accurate answers about your business, so you're in with a chance of being the one they recommend.
No jargon and no guarantees I can't keep. Just an honest look at how AI tools see your business today.
What's changed
Customers are asking, not just searching.
People used to type a few words into Google and click through a list of websites. Now many ask a full question and get a single answer back, often with only two or three businesses named. It's a question my own clients have started asking me: will we be one of them?
Google's AI Overviews
Many searches now open with an AI summary above the usual results. It pulls from websites that answer the question clearly, and the businesses it mentions get seen before anyone scrolls.
ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot
People ask these tools for recommendations the way they'd ask a friend: "Who's a good accountant in Witney?" The answer comes from what the tool can find and trust about the businesses nearby.
Longer, more specific questions
Searches are turning into full sentences, with a location, a budget and a deadline in them. Websites that only target a few keywords miss most of these. Websites that answer real questions get picked up.
How it works
How AI tools decide who to mention.
There's no secret switch to flip. AI tools recommend businesses they can understand, confirm and trust. These are the five things that matter most, and every one of them can be checked and improved.
Clear answers on your pages
What you do, where you do it, who it's for and roughly what it costs, written plainly. If your website makes people guess, the AI tools have to guess too, and they usually pick someone clearer.
Consistent business details
Your name, address, phone number and services should match everywhere: your website, Google, directories and social profiles. Mixed-up details make it harder for any system to be confident it has the right business.
Reviews and your Google profile
Recent, genuine reviews and a complete Google Business Profile are some of the strongest signals for local recommendations, in Google's AI Overviews and beyond. See how local SEO gets you on the map.
Mentions on other trusted sites
AI tools look past your own website. Being named by local press, trade bodies, suppliers and partners tells them other people vouch for you, not just you.
A website the tools can read
Fast pages, a clean structure, structured data and settings that don't block the crawlers. That includes being indexed in Bing as well as Google, because some AI tools draw on Bing's results. Find out what a website audit covers.
What I check and fix
An AI search check, done by hand.
I start by asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Google the questions your customers would ask, and recording what comes back. Then I go through your website and wider presence to find out why you are, or aren't, being mentioned.
Your website
- Service pages that answer real questions clearly
- Location pages for the towns you actually cover
- Prices, process and FAQs written in plain English
- Structured data (schema) for your business, services and FAQs
- Page speed, mobile layout and heading structure
- Settings that might block AI crawlers by mistake
Beyond your website
- Google Business Profile: categories, services, photos and posts
- Bing Places and Bing Webmaster Tools
- Reviews: how many, how recent, and how you reply
- Business name, address and phone number across directories
- Mentions on local, trade and partner websites
- How AI tools currently describe your business
You get a short, plain-English report: what the AI tools say about you now, what's holding you back, and the changes worth making first. If your website just needs a few fixes, I'll say so.

Straight talking
What I won't promise.
AI search is new, it changes quickly, and nobody controls what these tools say. Be wary of anyone who tells you otherwise.
I won't promise
- That ChatGPT or any other tool will recommend you by a set date
- A guaranteed spot in Google's AI Overviews
- Quick tricks, hidden text or anything that could get your site penalised
- Results from a single fix, when it's usually several small things together
I will
- Show you what the AI tools say about you now, before any work starts
- Explain every change in plain English, and why it matters
- Re-test the same questions after the work, so you can see what's changed
- Tell you honestly if the work isn't worth it for your business
FAQ
AI search questions, honest answers.
The questions my clients ask most about ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and getting their business recommended.
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It means making your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews to understand, check and recommend. In practice that means clear website content, structured data, consistent business details, good reviews and mentions on other trusted sites.
It overlaps a lot. Most of what helps you rank in Google also helps you show up in AI answers. The difference is the emphasis: AI tools reward clear, direct answers to real questions, and they look beyond your website at reviews, profiles and what other sites say about you. I treat it as part of good SEO, not a separate trick.
No, and nobody honestly can. AI tools decide what to say for themselves, and their answers change over time. What I can do is remove the things holding you back, strengthen the signals they rely on, and re-test the same questions afterwards so you can see the difference.
Website fixes can be picked up within weeks once search engines re-crawl your pages. Reviews, profile improvements and mentions on other sites build up over a few months. I re-test at regular intervals so you’re not left guessing.
Not always. Many websites only need clearer service pages, FAQs, schema and a tidy-up of their Google and Bing profiles. If your site is old, slow or hard to update, a rebuild can be the better investment, and I’ll tell you which after the free check.
For most local and service businesses, no. Blocking them makes it harder for AI tools to read your website and recommend you. Some sites block them by accident through security settings or plugins, which I check as part of the review.
Yes, and it’s often where it matters most. People ask AI tools for local recommendations all the time, like a builder in Banbury or a solicitor in Oxford. Your Google Business Profile, reviews and location pages play a big part in whether you’re named.
